FAQS

Does acupuncture hurt?

The needles used for acupuncture are extremely thin/fine, similar to the width of a human hair. Most patients do not experience pain. However, once the needle is inserted to the required depth (typically 2-5 mm) to reach the acupuncture point, then a sensation known as Deqi is achieved and this is best described as a dull ache or tingling feeling.

Is it safe?

Only single-use, pre-sterilised and disposable needles are ever used. The risk of adverse or severe side effects is extremely rare.

How many treatments will I need?

Each patient is different and the number of sessions required will vary depending on your specific condition. Most patients will feel the benefits relatively quickly, especially those with acute or sudden onset conditions, and they may only require a few appointments. As a general rule, chronic conditions relating to a long-standing illness will take longer for symptoms to improve. I will regularly discuss and review with you my thoughts on how many treatments may be required.

How do I prepare for treatment?

It is advisable to wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothes for your appointment. The most commonly used acupuncture points are located on the lower arms and legs and this will make accessing those points easier for the acupuncturist. Please avoid consuming any caffeine or alcohol for at least two hours before your acupuncture session as this may interfere with your treatment. It is best to avoid having treatment on an empty stomach or after a heavy meal as you may feel lightheaded or uncomfortable.

Please do not brush your tongue for 24 hours before your appointment. Observing the tongue is an important diagnostic tool for acupuncturists.
