WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?
Acupuncture derives from ancient Chinese medicine. It is a form of therapy that involves the application of fine needles to certain areas of the body in order to treat a variety of ailments. Acupuncture is considered a complementary medicine, and is based on a belief in what they refer to in Chinese medicine as the body's qi, or energy. This is linked to the notion that a lot of health problems are caused by a disruption of the flow of this energy or qi.
It is believed that qi travels through channels or meridian lines. It is through extensive knowledge and study of these meridians that acupuncturists can appropriately place fine needles to the appropriate areas of the body. When correctly placed, it is believed that these needles can then help to release qi and help to restore balance and energy flow.
Since its beginnings which date back over 2000 years, this knowledge has travelled to the West and is used for a vast variety of medical ailments including pain management and stress relief. It is rarely a painful procedure. You may require one or several sessions to experience the desired results.
